In recent years,China's rapid economic development has brought along a flourishing scene in education, culture, science and technology, and other fields. The level of the education of people has been greatly improved, and people's demand for scientific and cultural knowledge is increasingly growing. With the introduction of international popular science books into China, popular science translation has begun to play a key role in cultural and scientific exchanges. This translation practice is based on the first chapter of the book Caesar's Last Breath, written by Sam Kean. The book tells the secret of ubiquitous air around us in a humorous way.The first chapter tells the story of the first four atmospheres on earth. After the formation of our planet 4.5 billion years ago,a proper atmosphere emerged on our planet,as volcanoes began expelling gases from deep inside the Earth. The emergence of life then scrambled and remixed this original atmosphere, leading to the so-called oxygen catastrophe.Overall, the first chapter explains where air comes from and how gases behave in different situations. As a scientific text, the translation of the book can enrich the translator's knowledge. Moreover, the language of this book is witty and humorous, which is not as obscure as that of formal scientific papers,so it can help readers easily go into science and understand science. It is also helpful for readers to better understand air around us,which has a certain pioneering significance. The translation of the original text is popular science translation. There are both historical facts and anecdotes and rigorous science. In order to make readers not only feel the humor of the original text, but also understand the scientific accuracy of the original text, the translator chooses Newmark's communicative translation theory as the theoretical support.Various translation methods are used to translate the professional words, long difficult sentences and logical relations in the text, aiming to make target language readers receive accurate information and get the same reading experience as source language readers.
