This project is a selected E-C The idea of Canada:Letters to a Nation, together with a critical commentary of this translation project. This paper is based on the author's practical report on David Johnston's of The idea of Canada:Letters to a Nation. The original text was from a letter written by the Governor of Canada for his country. The original text demonstrates the political ideals of author's life and the public charity activities he devoted himself to.The work also reflects the Governor's enthusiasm and concern about the challenges facing the Canadian public service system-globalization,education,public interest services, and justice, which touch the translator a lot and motivates the translator to work out a translation version to inspire more people. In this work, the Governor also mentioned the patriotic and courageous qualities of the excellent Canadians and his praise and respect to these brave and dedicated Canadians.Based on the reading and translation of this work, critical commentary was composed to exhibit the translator's thinking inspired by original text and relevant translation theories. In order to realize Eugen Nida's functional equivalence translation theory, the translation project uses the theory of translation skills collected and edited by scholar Zhang Peiji as the guide, skills such as paraphrase, conversion, negation, affirmation, shift of perspective,division,abstraction,addition/amplification,omission/ellipsis and four-character words are applied. Moreover,Common translation techniques such as the translation of clauses;the translation of adverbial clauses;the translation of long sentences;as a supplement, the theory summarized by scholar Liu Miqing is used to form literal translation, free translation, semantic translation and communicative translation.Translation strategies such as foreignization translation, and domestication translation.
