Eco-critical Discourse Analysis Of English Travel News

With the rapid development of social economy,people pay more attention to the protection of ecological environment,and eco-tourism emerges as the times require.Ecotourism is booming all over the world,and the related news industry should also provide guidance for environmental protection and ecological civilization,and promote people to form good consciousness and habits of eco-environmental protection invisibly.While promoting the development of tourism economy,we must maintain a balanced ecological environment and seek sustainable development.Eco-critical discourse analysis,as the extension of traditional discourse analysis,lays emphasis on the means in which environmental problems are presented in written,oral or image forms,and is applied to the related environmental and environmentalism texts revealing potential ecological or non-ecological ideology.It focuses not only on disclosing the ideology with potential destruction,but also on talking about social discourse forms facilitating ecological sustainability.As a new thriving field of ecolinguistics.In the past few decades,many scholars have been trying to use different analysis methods to study the ecological factors in language and reveal the interaction between language and ecological environment.This thesis conducts an eco-critical discourse analysis on 100 English travel news of China Daily by applying Fairclough's three-dimensional model of discourse analysis.This thesis analyzes the transitive processes and attitude resources in English travel news,with the aim to explore ecological thoughts that are embodied,or on the contrary,missing in English travel news.Firstly,the paper describes and analyzes the linguistic features of English travel news from the perspective of transitivity;then,it explains the language use of English travel news from the perspective of attitude resources;finally,the author explains the ecological thoughts implied in English travel news.The study is devoted to revealing the mechanism of English travel news and proving the operability and effectiveness of this approach.Based on the above study,the following conclusions are derived:Firstly,the research of the transitivity features at the description stage shows that all the six process types are employed in the news reports.Material processes account for more than half of the whole discourse followed by relational and verbal processes,while mental,existential and behavioral processes are less employed.Secondly,appreciation is adopted most of the time through the analysis of English travel news from the perspective of attitudinal resources,which is determined by the guiding function of English travel news.To achieve their guiding function,highly natural affinity and ecological environment are required,which is realized by appreciation.Thirdly,the use of various resources reflects such deep ecological thoughts: in the ecosystem network,human beings and non-human resources are different existence,but with equal intrinsic value;human self-realization is achieved not only by self-potential but also by prosperous nature,rich culture and harmonious society.At the same time,the ecological thoughts embedded in the English travel news can not only reflect the popular ecological ideology but also manipulate the ecological ideology and the attitude of life.Furthermore,it embodies the philosophical thought of non-anthropocentrism,that is,ecological centrism.Study confirms that eco-critical discourse analysis can help us more critically and systematically scrutinize language which convey ecological and non-ecological thoughts,and comprehend how turn,ecological language manipulates human thinking,society and environment.
