Mo Yan is the first Chinese writer who wins the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the past thirty years,he has published a large number of works, among which the novel Sheng Si Pi Lao represents his writing style and his exploration in the field of fiction to a large extent. The concept of Pragmatic Enrichment first appeared in Lexical Pragmatics and it is mainly used to solve the problem of cognition and communication in a same language. In translation studies, pragmatic enrichment refers to a kind of processing which translators carry out to enrich various information gaps with the help of context so as to achieve a better understanding of the texts. This study focuses on pragmatic enrichment as the theoretical framework, and selects Life and Death are Wearing Me Out translated by Howard Goldblatt, the English version of Mo Yan's representative work Sheng Si Pi Lao,as the research object. With the method of qualitative analysis, the application of pragmatic enrichment as a strategy in the translation process of Sheng Si Pi Lao will be analyzed and explored from the aspects of intra-linguistic context and extra-linguistic context. The study finds that,Goldblatt's translation of Sheng Si Pi Lao embodies the application of pragmatic enrichment as a translation strategy, which is manifested in the devices of pragmatic narrowing and pragmatic broadening. At the intra-linguistic level, the pragmatic enrichment is helpful for the translator to understand and interpret the lexical gaps, deixis and discourse cohesion in two languages;at the extra-languistic level,it can help translators accurately convey and translate the culture related information. From this perspective,it can be indicated that the pragmatic enrichment,as a strategy of translation, can help the translator build a bridge of communication between the source text and the target text.Based on the theory of pragmatic enrichment, this thesis studies the English version of Mo Yan's representative work Sheng Si Pi Lao from a perspective of pragmatics. It aims to provide a new way for the research of literary translation, and tries to provide a new perspective and method for the study on Mo Yan and his literary works. It is hoped that this study can provide a new viewpoint for the study on Mo Yan's works, and on the other hand can shed some light on the combination of pragmatics and literary translation.
