In 1855,the second universal exposition was held in Paris,France. For the newly established Second Empire, this kind of exhibition could be employed to strengthen the imperial identity among the French. The first part of paper sorts out the historical origins of the universal exposition of 1855 in Paris. On the one hand,it inherited the tradition of the French National Industrial Products Exposition. On the other hand,it was inspired by the Great Exhibition which was held in London four years before. The second part of paper analyzes the ideas which the rulers of Second Empire tried to convey through the event Different from the British predecessor, the organizers of 1855 Universal Exposition paid more attention to the display of national superiority and propagation of political ideas, rather than promoting the concept and policy of free trade. The third part of article delved deeply into how the 1855 Paris Universal Exposition was held, not only pointing out the nature of the event, but also discussing the organizational structure, exposition buildings, funding, and rules of admission. The fourth part focuses on the evaluation and response of the 1855 Paris Universal Exposition. The beginning of this chapter shows the official summary of the event, and the following passage analyzes the views of different circles of society, especially the attitude of the literati represented by Baudelaire. They made sharp criticisms on the 1855 Universal Exposition, and the central issue was about the ideas of progressiveness.By researching the Universal Exposition of 1855,we can not only obtain an understanding of the ideals and strategies of ruling class, but also recognize the public attitudes toward the imperial ideology from a moderate perspective.
