News reports usually reflect social events objectively and fairly,but in fact,any report inevitably hides the attitudes and positions of the reporters.Appraisal theory is about the evaluation which refers to the negotiation of every attitude in the discourses,which is concerned about the intension of the attitude and which indicates values and ways to align readers.Based on the semantic meaning,appraisal theory can be divided into attitude,engagement and graduation.The focus of this thesis is to study the attitudinal resources in Chinese and American economic news discourses,aiming at revealing what attitudinal resources are adopted in the selected news discourses,and exploring reasons for similar and different distribution of them between American and Chinese economic news.This thesis attempts to use "trade war" as keyword to search for 249 pieces of English news about 180000 words,from February to September 2018 in Global Times(GT)and The New York Times(NYT),two official newspapers in China and the United States.Then it makes an analysis on the similar and different distribution of attitudinal resources.Moreover,by using UAM Corpus Tool to annotate and count,this thesis analyzes the data and explores the following three questions:(1)What is the distribution of the attitudinal resources of Affect,Judgment and Appreciation in the American and Chinese economic news?(2)What are the differences and similarities of the distribution of the attitudinal resources between Chinese and American economic news?(3)What are the possible reasons and thereby explanations for such distribution from critical discourse analysis perspective?The conclusions are as follows.Firstly,affect,judgment and appreciation resources are widely and extensively distributed in economic news between America and China,among which judgment resources are the most used,affect resources are the second widely adopted,and appreciation resources are least employed.Secondly,the similarity of the distribution of the attitudinal resources in the news discourses between America and China lies in where negative attitudinal resources are more attentively used than that of positive attitudinal resources,which indicates that it is consensus of the people from the two nations to jointly oppose trade war so that the two governments should take the people’s voice into consideration before making decisions.The differences lie in the followings: the affect resources of the American economic news discourses are more abundant than that in Chinese economic news discourses which can tell that because America is a society of individualism,people tend to talk more about their personal feelings;in addition,the judgement as well as appreciation resources of Chinese news discourses are much more in quantity than that of American’s which reveals that in the process of reporting,Chinese reporters tend to be more objective and impartial.Although the two countries have similar and different attitudes toward trade war,only seeking common ground and reserving differences and achieving win-win co-operation are the very approaches to solve the problem.This study broadens the research perspective of economic news,and expands the application scope of attitude system,which has theoretical and practical significance.By analyzing the attitudinal resources of the discourses,this study can help readers understand the distribution features of attitudinal resources in economic news and understand the reasons for similar and different distribution of attitudinal resources between American and Chinese economic news discourses. |
