With the development of globalization, the mutual communication between different countries and cultures is becoming more frequent than usual.Translation, serving as a bridge of information communication and cultural exchanges between various nations, plays an indispensable role in the process. As a special carrier of culture, literary works reflect the uniqueness and thinking of a nation directly. Therefore, the translation of literary works is of great significance to the cultural spread. As an expressive way of literary works, foregrounding language arouses readers'interest in reading with its unique charm and leaves them a profound impression, which not only adds the interest of literary works, but also allows readers to think more about literary works themselves. The so-called foregrounding language is noted for the rhetorical strategy that emphasizes a part of words from the whole background by language variation for the purpose of art.It contains two forms, including deviation and parallelism.Deviation is the nature of the prominence,it is a departure from the cornventional, while parallelism expresses as prominence in quantitative terms, which is the reinforcement of the conventional.Accordingly, the translation of foregrounding language is also a topic that many translators highly concerned.Verschueren's adaptation theory holds that language use is essentially a process of continuous language selection,in which context plays an important role.As far as Verschueren concerned, linguistic context and communicative context consist of context.Within the framework of adaptation theory, translation is a process of continuous adaptation between source language and target language.Context adaptation requires translators to balance the dynamic choice between source language and target language from linguistic context and communicative context two aspects. The Garlic Ballads was one of the representatives of Mo Yan,a famous contemporary Chinese writer. The American translator and sinologist Howard Goldblatt translated it.Mo Yan used his great imagination and abundant language to present a great deal of foregrounding language. At present, the researches on The Garlic Ballads are very rich in academic circles, mainly focusing on narrative technique, revealing and reflecting on real life and rewriting and manipulation in translation versions. The study on foregrounding language and its translation is still blank.Taking context adaptation theory as theoretical framework, the thesis aims to explore translation approaches of foregrounding language with qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis and case analysis. This paper first reviewed all kinds of research results of The Garlic Ballads, and classified foregrounding language after reading the source text carefully, then found out the corresponding translation in its English version, finally classified and analyzed the translation of foregrounding language after circulation. The research found that the foregrounding language in The Garlic Ballads were embodied in lexical deviation, semantic deviation, phonological deviation, dialectal deviation, deviation of register, deviation of historical period and parallelism. The translator used transliteration(plus annotation),literal translation, free translation, and omission to adapt the target readers'acceptance and retain the source language's uniqueness.
