The "flipped classroom",which originated in America in 2007,is increasingly being applied to practical teaching.Based on the development of network information technology, flipped classroom teaching model changes the order of knowledge instruction and knowledge internalization, which is conducive to the personalized learning of students.Flipped classroom model emphasizes that students carry out autonomous learning to absorb the knowledge before class and finish the internalization and consolidation of knowledge with the help of teachers in class.Being a promising novel teaching method, the advantages and feasibility of flipped classroom model in teaching have been verified in foreign countries. The research on spoken English teaching in Chinese universities has yielded fruitful results in recent years. However, students still have low activity and participation in class.Their learning initiative is poor, their time and opportunities for practicing oral English are far from enough. This study intends to testify the applicability and effectiveness of flipped classroom model in college spoken English class, namely whether the model is conducive to improving students’ spoken English proficiency and autonomous learning ability, and explore the students’ attitudes towards flipped classroom teaching model. The subjects of this study are 101 sophomores of two classes from School ot Mechatronics of Qingdao Hengxing University of Science and Technology and the teaching experiment lasts for sixteen weeks. The subjects are divided into Experimental Class and Control Class, then the flipped classroom model is adopted in the Experimental Class while the traditional teaching model is applied in Control Class during the experiment. This study employs tests, questionnaires and interview as the instruments, and combines quantitative and qualitative research methods. The data are analyzed by SPSS 17.0.After in-depth research on flipped classroom and related theories, this paper designs and conducts relevant experimental research, and then analyzes the experimental data in detail. The main findings are as follow:1)Students in EC make noteworthy progress in the accuracy and fluency of spoken English, proving that flipped classroom teaching model is helpful to improve spoken English proficiency of non-English majors.2)The flipped classroom model has positive impact on students’ learner autonomy ability.3)The flipped classroom model is supported and recognized by most students in the experimental class, which increases the students’ speaking learning enthusiasm and classroom participation.Based on the research findings, the present study also reveals some pedagogical implications for the teaching and learning of spoken English in the flipped classroom. This study is expected to provide reference for flipped classroom teaching in the future. |
