This report is based on an American literary novel A Death in the Family,which has won the Pulitzer prize for literature.It is a novel set in the life of two generations in the contemporary American Family.The author is James Agee.The translator cooperated with classmates to translate and proofread each other.During the translation process,the translator finds that some English idioms frequently appear in the original works,which causes great difficulties to the translation work.This report is based on the first and improved versions of English idioms in the novel.About 10,000 words have been selected from the original novel as an appendix.And the translator mainly uses the documentary method,the case analysis method and the parallel text method.Literature represents the wisdom of great writers.Therefore,the translation quality should be ensured so that these outstanding works can be spread more widely.Translation is a bridge to link two different cultures.Translators should pursue the content and ideas contained in the source culture,and consider the positions of the author of the source language and the reader of the target language.This report analyzes the cases from two major translation strategies,which are foreignization and domestication.And this report also combines the results of the former researchers and uses them.And cases of English idioms involved are classified and analyzed so as to explore the effect of translation and improve the quality of translation.This report has five chapters.The first chapter is task description,which mainly introduces the translation task,research content and its significance.The second chapter is the task process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation modification.The third chapter introduces the main theoretical basis,namely foreignization and domestication;The fourth chapter is the case analysis and summary of English idioms in A Death in the Family,namely: first of all,brief introduction of the concept and classification of English idioms;secondly,case study of translating pure idioms;thirdly,case study of translating semi-literal idioms;lastly,case study of translating literal idioms.The last chapter is a summary of the translation practice,in-depth analysis and discussion of the difficulties the translator has encountered,and points out the existing problems and the completion of the translation task after the harvest and experience.The appendix provides the original English and Chinese translation versions of the novel.At the end of the article is a reference for this writing.
