Lin Yutang,as one of the most prominent modern litterateurs and translators in China,dedicated many outstanding translation works,contributing enormously to the going-out of Chinese literature and culture and bridging between China and western world in literature field.Six Chapters of a Floating Life,Lin's version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji,is one of his translation works.Existing studies on this version tend to analyze the translation actions at the micro level,such as dichotomy analysis of translation strategies and comparative analysis of versions.The thesis focuses on the textual and cultural level to analyze Six Chapters of a Floating Life from different aspects under five models of translation ethics.The thesis takes Andrew Chesterman's five models of translation ethics as theoretical framework.From the perspective of representation ethics model,the thesis investigates the writing style,social customs and aesthetics.With service ethics model,it looks into the service for Chinese classical literature and Chinese culture.Based on the communication ethics model,it explores the communication about ethos,poetry and allusion in the ST.The norm-based ethics analyzes the reader and culture expectation.The model of commitment ethics discusses how Lin,as a specialist of both cultures,balances in dilemma situations.The thesis found that Lin's version generally represented the writing style,social customs and personal aesthetics properly.Lin's version served Chinese classical literature and culture.Lin's version applied communication ethics while dealing with ethos,poetry and allusion in order to assist the communication between the target reader and the ST.Lin's version cares about the reader expectation as well as culture expectation,and it helped the going-out of excellent part of Chinese culture.Lin's version strived to coordinate and mediate the conflicts between representation ethics and communication ethics as well as within the norm-based ethics.The thesis performed a detailed analysis of Lin's version,and it enriched the study of the translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji,providing reference for further studies.
