In this information age,English newspapers play a critical role in facilitating people’s access to the latest news all around the world due to their dominant positions in the global mainstream journalism and media.China’s increasing involvement in the international market creates a higher and higher demand for Chinese translation of English news reports. In this sense,it is meaningful to study effective application of the translation theory on translation practice,in order to produce quality E-C news translation work. The Economist,a London-based newspaper, has earned a reputation for in-depth coverage of international hot issues."The new Arab revolution" is a special report published in The Economist on June 2018 and is used as the translation material for the study of this thesis.Based on the translation practice, this thesis is aimed to demonstrate the applicability of Nida’s functional equivalence theory in E-C news special report translation.Nida holds that translation essentially is a communicative activity. So the functional equivalence theory advocates an equivalent and natural information transfer between the source text and the target text, rather an identical and mechanical word-to-word translation. The ultimate goal of his theory is to enable target readers to have the equivalent reading response with that of original readers. This thesis attempts to discuss the practical application of functional equivalence theory in E-C translation to news special report from three levels:lexical, syntactical, and discourse.Beginning with a detailed analysis of the translation material in terms of its lexical, syntactical and discourse features, such as plenty of culture-loaded words, proper nouns, figurative expressions, frequent use of right-branching sentences, sentences with inanimate subjects but animate verbs, attributive clauses,as well as diverse devices for cohesion and for showing the negative or satirical mood, this thesis deals with some concrete methods adopted correspondently in translating the“The new Arab revolution",including literal translation, paraphrase, addition and omission,so as to optimize the effect of the translation of above features. In conclusion, this translation research based on case study justifies that Nida’s functional equivalence theory is applicable on the E-C translation of the news special report and it can offer the translator effective and feasible guidance.
