Clement Greenberg(1909-1994)was one of the most influential critics of the Western art area in the mid to late 20th century but also a spokesman for abstra ct expressionism.Greenberg's early works Avant-Garde and Kitsch has aroused widespread conc ern.Later,he published a large number of art criticism articles in many important journals to promote his criticism,Abstract Expressionism and other painters.As the authority of the critics,his critical speech help New York to realize the transfer mation of replacing Paris as the world art capital of art.Diana Trilling,a literary critic of the Nation,once commented on him:"Greenberg has changed the direct ion of American art criticism.In the course of the development of modern Ameri can art,no one was able to promote so many famous artists as he did.He had a gre at influence on painters,critics,dealers and scholars."Through systematic research on Greenberg's art criticism,this paper further ex plores how he manipulates,controls and changes people's aesthetic ideas to achieve s promotion effects.His promotion and advocacy of the Abstract Expressionism su ccessfully promoted many artists such as Jackson Pollock,Arshile Gorky,Morris Louis,Kenneth Noland,Barnett Newman,Anthony Caro,Jules Olitski,Jack Bush and other artists.To study Greenberg's art criticism,there are five chapters in this paper.The f irst chapter:Combined with the humanistic background of the era and Greenberg's life b rief,it explored the source of Greenberg's art criticism;The second chapter:Studying th e development of Greenberg's art criticism;The third chapter:It mainly explains the ba sic content of Greenberg's modernist view;The fourth chapter:Through the research of Greenberg's art criticism,it deeply explores its influence on the American art market;Ch apter five:Explain the influence of Greenberg on the development of Western art.
