Metacognition strategy is an important learning strategy that has tremendous effects on the efficacy of English reading teaching.Though now there are many studies into metacognition strategy,very few have probed into the role of metacognition strategy in English reading teaching.By analyzing the application of metacognition strategy in university English reading teaching,this paper involves questionnaire surveys for the metacognition strategy among training of metacognition strategy.In addition,the English teachers for sophomore students are interviewed regarding metacognition strategy teaching,so as to understand the effects of metacognition strategy on university English reading teaching.Lastly,specific suggestions are made for the use of metacognition strategy in reading classes.To sum up,the study helps enrich the theories of how metacognition strategy contributes to English teaching,and it offers theoretical references for students to foster and enhance their English reading ability.The research methods of this paper include literature reading,questionnaire survey,interview and mathematical analysis.Three fresh student classes of Beijing Institute of Economics and Management that show similar English proficiencies to each other received questionnaires,which asked for their original knowledge of metacognition and how they applied metacognition strategy to reading.Afterward,students were systematically and purposefully trained to enhance their ability of applying metacognition strategy to English reading.Lastly,the changes of students were traced by reading tests and interviews,leading to a comparison with their reading proficiency before the interviews.As a result,it turns out that students can properly monitor the reading process and reflect on what they read to gain lessons and experiences hence further increasing the precision in reading.Language competence consists of four parts:listening,speakin,reading and writing.Reading,as a part of it,is also an important channel for learning English.In the process of reading,English learners can grasp more words and phrases in the context of the book,understand the meaning of the sentence,and students can write English according to the vocabulary and structure they have learned,and train their spoken English.After reading a large number of texts,students can also use the topic of the reading text,or use the sentences to dialogue with the teacher,in the process of communication between the two sides to improve their language ability.College English textbooks are rich in content and topics,among which students can learn more English knowledge and master more languages.Therefore,reading is also an important part of students' English learning process.At present,the teaching of college English reading is still dominated by teachers,and students are in the position of passive acceptance of knowledge.Reading is a subject demanding high comprehensive knowledge.If students only use their knowledge passively to read,their reading level will be limited.Reading activities are learning.According to their own knowledge and information,they can think and leam the content of reading.In reading,the reader needs to supervise every link of reading,and solve the problems in the reading process in time.Thus,effective reading as a cognitive process,but also as a metacognitive activity.Foreign language reading also includes several components,such as word decoding,phrase collocation and complex sentence pattern discrimination.Therefore,reading requires the reader to have a strong metacognitive ability.In the past 30 years,metacognition has gradually become a popular research object in many English and foreign language learning.Learners' poor learning ability can be improved by learning strategies.Learning strategies are divided into special training according to information processing mode:metacognitive strategy,cognitive strategy and social affective strategy.Metacognitive strategies are regarded as advanced executive skills of learners' cognitive processing knowledge,which regulate language learning management steps through language learning planning,monitoring and evaluation.Furthermore,the author goes beyond the study to touch upon the predictions,speculations and conjectures before reading;the monitoring policies while reading;the reflections after reading;and the writing of reflection journals.Specific suggestions were also made by the author to encourage students to independently come up with the ways of improving reading ability,which will be useful for teachers to help students improve reading ability and act as good teaching tips for teachers to learn.
