Doris Lessing,as an outstanding female writer of the 20th ce.tury, has made great contributions to the development of the post-war English literature, and her first novel The Grass is Singing attracted much attention when it was just published, which also laid a solid foundation for her reputation in the literary world.Scholars abroad and at home have shown great interest in this novel and have studied it from many aspects, including post-colonialism,feminism,eco-feminism,psychoanalysis,Marxism and so on,but few of them tried to analyze it from the perspective of postcolonial ecocriticism. Therefore, this thesis will start from this perspective and analyze Lessing's The Grass is singing from two main aspects, the imbalance of social ecology and imbalance of spiritual ecology.Based on the analysis,it is thought that the damage colonists have made on the African ecology and the complex relationship between humans and land have led to the imbalance of social ecology and tragedies of human beings and land. And the relationships between the black and the white, men and women, and the poor and the rich have caused the imbalance of spiritual ecology. From the perspective of postcolonial ecocriticism, this thesis interprets the characters depicted in this novel who struggle doggedly under the heavy oppression, just like the vigorous grass, and reveals how the anthropocentrism and eurocentrism based on racism and patriarchal system have destroyed the natural ecology and human beings. It is hoped that the thesis will appeal to people to respect the nature and all kinds of life, and fight for the ecological justice as well as social justice to build a more harmonious society.
