A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Tenth Chapter Of Indelible Ink

Zenger trial,a milestone in the process of American colonists pursuing press freedom,brings out the distinction to the public between libel and freedom of the press.After the Revolution,freedom of speech and freedom of the press are written into the First Amendment,which lays the foundation of press freedom in the United States.Even to this day,press freedom is still an indispensable right or weapon for people throughout the world and still has a profound impact on a country's legal and political progress.Therefore,research on press freedom can not only meet the need of building up legal and political civilization but comply with the development trend of globalization.The author participates in translating the book Indelible Ink:The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Brief of America's Free Press.There are limited translated works about Zenger trial in China,most of which can be found in Chinese translation of some works on American history.Translating Indelible Ink therefore can fill in the gaps in related materials to some extent,which is of great academic and social value.Chapter Ten of the book is chosen as the source text to be translated into Chinese,and this report is written based on the translation project.In this chapter,the book describes the situation after the trial,political struggle among factions and the social influence of the trial.Categorized into social science books,the source text possesses features of informative texts.The author,based on the functional equivalence theory brought up by Nida,explores the major issues and difficulties in the translation process,proposes corresponding solutions from lexical and syntactic levels,striving to achieve equivalence of the informative function between the source text and the translation,on the premise of conveying the meaning and content of the source text accurately.The author hopes that,through her experiment,ultimately,the translation of social science texts could better meet diversified needs of target readers and the translation market.
