A Report On The C-E Translation Of Da Ran Fang (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Translation Compensation

The ideal translation is that the effect of translation on the target language reader is consistent with the effect of the source text on the source language reader.However,due to great huge differences between Chinese and Western cultures,semantic bias and loss often occur in translation.Translation sometimes fails to convey the information,function or effect of the source language fully and accurately,and even leads to misunderstanding.As the coordinator of the two cultures,translators are obliged to minimize the loss.The novel Da Ran Fang tells a legendary story of Chen S-ting developing into a successful national industrialist from an unknown beggar in the late Qing Dynasty,which reflects the social status of China at that time.Translating the novel of this kind may enable Western readers to have a deeper understanding and recognition of Chinese society and culture and increase the influence of Chinese culture.This translation practice report is guided by translation compensation,and selects the first chapter of Da Ran Fang as the object of translation practice.Based on an in-depth analysis of the language features of the original text,the report decides to use translation compensation strategy.First of all,based on the important research results of Chinese and Western scholars in translation compensation,including its concept,principles,strategies and methods,the report establishes a comprehensive theoretical framework.Secondly,according to the difficulties encountered in the translation process,the translator,under the guidance of translation compensation,analyzes the 22 typical examples at the level of semantics,culture and aesthetics.Case analysis shows that translation compensation strategy helps translators to convey the original text accurately and enables the translated text to conform to English grammar and pragmatic habits,making the translations more easily accepted by readers of different cultures.This report is intended to analyze the significance of translation compensation strategy in this Chinese-English translation practice through the translator’s own translation practice,to arouse the translators’ attention to translation compensation in translation practice,and to provide some reference for the English translation of such texts.
