Extracurricular reading is an essential supplement to in-class reading and plays an important role in English learning.However,current junior high school students' extracurricular reading sources are single,and their reading materials are dull.Causing most English teachers focus on the skill training of reading comprehension in class,which could lead to lack of students' interests in reading and insufficient in reading ability.Theme-based Instruction(TBI)model is a teaching approach that advocates language learning should base on theme teaching,and students should choose the theme according to their interests and needs.The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of TBI model on junior high school students' reading motivation and proficiency in English extracurricular reading.By the Input Hypothesis,Output Hypothesis,Constructivist Theory,and Cooperative Theory,the present study investigates two research questions:(1)Does TBI model have a positive effect on learners' English reading motivation?(2)Can TBI model improve junior high school students' reading proficiency?Two parallel classes of junior high school students in Zengcheng District were taken as the participants and 20 weeks' extracurricular reading teaching experiment was carried out.At the beginning of the experiment,the questionnaire and pre-test were conducted to test whether the reading motivation and reading ability of the two classes are at the same level.In the process of the teaching experiment,the theme-based model is adopted in the experimental class,which focus on learning the thematic content.And English novels are used as extracurricular reading materials for thematic reading training.However,the controlled class adopted the conventional extracurricular reading teaching method,that is to say,the teaching focuses on learning language knowledge and paying attention to the training of reading comprehension ability.The post-questionnaire and post-test were carried out after the experiment to investigate the effect of TBI model on students' reading motivation and reading level.Besides,theBy analyzing the quantitative data with SPSS 19.0 and discussing all the qualitative data,the conclusions are drawn to answer the research questions as follows :(1)TBI model has a positive effect on learner's English reading motivation.(2)TBI model can effectively promote the development of students' English reading proficiency.The study concludes that the TBI model can be effective and feasible in enhancing junior high school students' reading motivation and reading proficiency.The study generates some pedagogical implications for reading teaching;although there are some limitations,it still can be the reference for further research.
