With the sci-tech development in China and the international exchanges of academic achievements,it is very important to develop sci-tech translation, which has certain limitations domestically.Meanwhile,sci-tech translation is also facing challenges from machine translation, which provides a necessary cognitive turn for its study. This report discusses the translation of “Urban Trees Reduce Nutrient Leaching to Groundwater”,a paper on ecology and environmental science.Starting from the perspective of cognitive semantics, and with the help of image schema model by Johnson and Lakoff, this report makes the semantic analysis of the source text, and the representation or restructuring in the target text.In case study, the translation process and effect of typical translation examples are discussed from two aspects: the representation and restructuring of image schemas, mainly focusing on four image schemas by Evans and Green, including SPACE,CONTAINMENT,LOCOMOTION and FORCE.This model helps to promote correct understanding of the source text and effective expression in the target text, overcoming the inherent cognitive differences between English and Chinese, making the discourse more coherent, the translation of complex English sentences more explicit, and the terminology more standard. This report promotes the application of image schema in sci-tech translation, and develops sci-tech translation from the cognitive aspect. It provides a scheme for systematically understanding the original text and improving the quality of sci-tech translation. |
