The Slaughterhouse-five(1969)is one of the most famous bestsellers in the America and it carries a strong Christian consciousness of Kurt Vonnegut. The religious opinion of Kurt Vonnegut is a contradiction that contains the dual tendency of deconstruction and affection. The degeneration and alienation of human nature in post-modern society led to Vonnegut's contradictory religious view.In his works,Vonnegut emphasizes two real factors that accelerate the dissolution of modern Christianity: technology and war.In Vonnegut's view, they are not only the source of the Vonnegut religious crisis, but also the panic of Western postmodern society. He reconstructed his own religious beliefs while deconstructing Christian ideology in the Slaughterhouse Five.Vonnegut shows a dilemma towards religion: on the one hand,he ruthlessly deconstructed the image of God and Christian doctrine;on the other hand,he is deeply devout to Christianity. He had expressed the suspicion of the practical utility of the Christianity in reality dimension, but agreed with its ultimate concern and humanitarian spirit in spiritual dimension.Vonnegut's religion is seems to be a great deal of agreement with Whitehead's Process Theology, because it's a constantly evolving in the postmodern context and its formation is closely related to Vonnegut's early unfortunate. This religious dilemma is essentially a hope that we can rely on Christianity to improve human nature in social reality and seeking positive significance in life to against the bitter suffering.Vonnegut's sense of belonging to religion focuses on the spiritual level and he wants to establish a system both on moral and redemption by Christianity to realize his humanitarian ideal by comprehensively establishing the connection between human beings and the world. But all of this religious fantasy brings the Utopian significance to the Slaughterhouse-five.Nonetheless,this appeal also represents a positively constructed consciousness in the post-modern cultural background.
