A Comparative Study Of The Narrative Strategies Of Chinese And American Hua Mulan Stories

The Mulan story originated from “Mulanshi” in the Northern Dynasty of China.For thousands of years,her story has been sung in various forms,such as opera,novels,opera,movies,TV series,etc.After the adaptation of the American Chinese writer—Tang Tingting and the Disney Company,the works of “The Woman Warrior” and “Mulan” made the Mulan story spread to foreign countries and produced certain influence.But in the narrative of the Mulan story,different strategies have been demonstrated at home and abroad.In the narrative of Hua Mulan's story,China and the United States have shaped different Mulan images through the same story frame,conveying different values and having a different impact on Chinese and American culture.Under the cultural background of telling the story of China and spreading the voice of China,it has practical significance to explore the narrative strategy of the American Mulan story.Based on the theory of Narratology and the theory of Dramatistic Pentad Identification,Using Burke's dramatic analysis method,starting with the five elements of agent,scene,act,agency and purpose,this study selects the traditional Chinese poem “Mulanshi” and the film “Hua Mulan” as the domestic cases,and selects the Tang Tingting novel “The Woman Warrior” and the Disney animated film “Mulan” as the US cases.Through the study of the cases and analysis the text of the Chinese and American Mulan story,this paper compares the historical evolution of the image of Chinese and American Hua Mulan and the narrative strategy of the story,discusses the differences of its narrative strategy,and proposes its enlightenment on telling the story of China and the improvement of cultural influence.This study compares the narrative characters,narrative scenes,narrative acts,narrative methods and narrative purposes of the Chinese and American Mulan story,and finds that the Chinese and American Mulan stories have the same place in narrative characters and narrative scenes,but show a big difference in narrative methods,narrative acts and narrative purposes.That is to maintain the consistency of Mulan story characters and framework,but to express different story intentions and values.The Hua Mulan story in China focuses on filial piety culture and family culture,while the American Mulan story focuses on freedom consciousness and female consciousness.By comparing and analyzing the textual basis and narrative five factors of the Chinese and American Mulan story,the study summarizes three narrative strategies that carry the values of other countries through their own stories,carry their own values through their own stories,and carry their own values through other countries' stories.And conclude three enlightenments to praise Chinese stories and enhance the international influence of Chinese culture: by creating unique IP symbols and cultural products;integrating excellent culture and enhancing cross-media narrative capabilities;focusing on shared values and increasing cross-cultural communication.
