| William Somerset Maugham is a famous British novelist and playwright in the 20 th century.His masterpiece Of human bondage has received wide attention from all walks of life.Of human bondage is a semi-autobiographical novel.In the past,most scholars analyzed the growth of the protagonist “Philip” from the perspective of initiation novels.In order to analyze the growth of characters fully,so that it can offer better advice for readers’ growth,this dissertation adopts close reading and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to interpret how the main and minor characters break obstacles,meet all the needs,explore the meaning of life and realize self.First of all,the article makes a comprehensive introduction to the author and its works at home and abroad.The second part of the article introduces Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in detail,which lays the foundation for the theoretical analysis of the text below.The third chapter of the article focuses on how the novel’s protagonist,Philip,meets the basic needs,then meets the needs of growth to achieve self.The fourth part of the article analyzes how the secondary characters,Price,Hayward and Norah in the novel fail or succeed under Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.The fifth part explores the emotion problem and the meaning of life combining with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.In this dissertation,Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is used to probe into the meaning of striving courageously with personal efforts and the help of others in the process of personal growth.Figure 0,Table 0,Reference 54... |
