Focusing on the relationship between the calligraphy art of Zhao Puchu and Buddhism,this paper reveals that Buddhism has a great influence on the calligraphy of Zhao Puchu and discusses the calligraphy content of Zhao Puchu which reflects distinct Buddhist thoughts and the active role of his calligraphy in carrying forward Buddha dharma.The paper is divided into three parts.The first part combs out the predestined relationship between Zhao Puchu and Buddhism and his calligraphy creation path.Greatly influenced by his family in Buddhism and calligraphy in childhood,Zhao Puchu was destnined to participate in various Buddhist activities and devoted himself to Buddhism career.After inheriting “Life Buddhism” of Master Taixu,Zhao Puchu started advocating “Humanistic Buddhism”,and made great contributions to Chinese Buddhism.Zhao Puchu devoted his life to digging into calligraphy,created a large number of calligraphy works,formed his own distinctive artistic characteristics and had a great influence on the history of contemporary Chinese calligraphy.The second part discusses the Buddhist thought reflected in Zhao Puchu's calligraphy.With rich content,Zhao Puchu's calligraphy works mainly include the writing of scriptures and and self-created poems,which are mainly related toBuddhism.Besides,the poems created by him contained the thoughts of loving country,the Party,people and world peace,which were consistent with the thought of “Earthly Buddhism” advocated by him.The third part explores the relationship between the Zhao Puchu's pursuit of calligraphy style and the promotion of Buddha dharma.Since Buddhism was introduced into China in the Han Dynasty,the calligraphy has been used to spread Buddhism while being greatly influenced by Buddhism.Zhao Puchu mainly chose to make creation in the regular script which was similar to running script,so as to facilitate people's reading and the spreading of Buddha dharma.Zhao Puchu created a handsome,beautiful,plain,natural and unique style after inheriting the classics and absorbing the “calligraphy style of Buddhist mood” of Su Huang and others,which was well-received among common people and very conducive to the spread of Buddhism.
