The New English Curriculum Standard for High School(2012)emphasizes the ability of English listening in high school students with specific requirements,which is an important embodiment of high school students' language proficiency and an inevitable essence of quality-oriented English teaching.However,in the teaching practice,seldom attention is paid to listening and the teaching mode is old-fashioned and single-patterned,with boring and dull classroom atmosphere.Therefore,under the traditional and ineffective teaching approach,the listening ability of high school students is not optimistic and always at a low level.In the long run,it will surely affect high school students' overall performance in the command of English.Howard Gardner proposed multiple intelligences(MI)theory,laying stress on learners' different intelligences,which can be developed under effective education.After realizing the diversified talents of different students,teachers can design related teaching activities to promote students' learning and intelligence development in a multiple way.Inspired by MI theory,the author investigates the approach and efficiency of the application of MI theory to senior English listening teaching,referring to the following two questions: 1.Can the application of MI theory to senior English listening teaching stimulate senior students' English listening interest and confidence? 2.Can the application of MI theory to senior English listening teaching improve senior students' English listening proficiency?To solve the questions mentioned above,the author selects the students of science in two different classes from a middle school in Ganzhou as the subjects to conduct the comparable experiment,which lasts a whole semester.In the experimental class,the author designs diverse listening activities according to students' multiple intelligences and implements the experiment,while in the controlled class,the traditional way of listening teaching is adopted.Multiple intelligences scale,listening questionnaires and listening tests are distributed to compare students' MI profiles,listening interest,listening skills and listeningproficiency before and after the experiment,whose results are scientifically analyzed by means of SPSS20.0.After the experiment,it is clearly shown that the listening interest and listening proficiency of the experimental class are obviously improved,while there is no obvious improvement in the controlled class.The experiment points out the application of MI theory to the senior English listening teaching can effectively arouse students' listening interest and evidently improve students' listening proficiency,which is of great theoretical and practical benefit to the overall development of senior students.
