This paper attempts to apply the mirror theory of psychic analyst Jacques Lacan(1901-1981)and its three core concepts of “imaginary order”,“symbolic order” and“real order” to explore the psychic development of Anna Severell of The Shadow of the Sun(1964)and the self-searching process of Julia Corbett of The Game(1967)written by Byatt(1936-),a British contemporary well-known scholar-writer and critic, through her trying to get rid of the potential influence of her old sister. This paper includes five parts: part one covers the introduction to A.S.Byatt and her works, especially her early two novels The Shadow of The Sun(1964)and The Game(1967),literature review and structure of the paper.Part two is about theoretical framework including the elaboration on the Mirror Stage and three registers of human reality: the imaginary order, the symbolic order and the real order.Part three is one of the key parts of the paper, aiming at analyzing their identifications with their images and formation of I through “making-like” and obedience to “father” to interpret Anna’s Hunger for Oneness and Julia’s Search of Self in the three registers. The other key part is the fourth one,it is the heroines’ wakening and returning in real order;their shortly touch with this order will be studied one by one.Last but not the least,is the conclusion, made in Part five, which expresses the view that the human society is constructed under the basis of people’s unconscious obedience to kinds of regulations and principle, then any identification with others means alienation of oneness and self, other’s desire actually, can only be further to involve in the Oneness and Self.Everybody is trying to involve in the real order,in which no regulation or constraint, only different age period, different desires. The pure pursuit,a displacement in human register, can only be realized shortly under the motivation of “jouissance” and death wish, like Julia, the young sister who is in infidelity marriage, and Cassandra, the old sister commits suicide. |
