The known world focuses on the problems of minorities and marginal groups living in the western society, which has high literariness, sociality and profound practical significance. The novel reveals the identity anxiety of African Americans in the face of cultural differences. In the process of identity construction, the lack of identity makes black people feel confused and painful.Based on Homi Bhabha's theory of hybridity, the identity of Henry is made an analysis,Moses and Caldonia, who are the three main characters in The known world, from three levels: agonism and negotiation of hybrid identity, the other and marginal cultural identity.Henry and Moses are assimilated by the white society, they abandon the black culture, and finally fail to build their own cultural identity.Caldonia,a black woman, treasures the national culture of her fellow black people and successfully maintains her identity and recognizes herself. On the one hand, they have deep-rooted senses of African cultural destiny;on the other hand, they have strong yearnings for white culture, and their identities are hybrid.Through the analysis, the understanding of Homi Bhabha's hybrid theory has been further deepened.Hybridity theory opposes the cultural hegemony of the western colonists, breaks the bound of traditional inherent cultural identity and construct their own cultural space. When facing with the crisis of losing identity in cultural conflict and the multicultural background in the world today, ethnic minorities can relocate their identities and rebuild their identities only if they find their own identities, which are hybrid cultural identities that transcend ethnic race, and combine traditional black culture with white American culture.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 53...
