This report takes the interpreting practice of the 2017 annual conference of “the Great Power Economic Forum” as an example. The author tries to apply Halliday's register theory to analyze the register characteristics of the source language and give corresponding interpreting strategies so as to achieve register equivalence in the process of interpreting.Register theory explains that language changes in different situations.Compared with those less formal business talks, escort interpreting, the forum the author attended is an academic one on economics, which belongs to formal register. Thus, the report mainly analyzes the speaker's linguistic and paralinguistic characteristics in formal register from three variables according to register theory: field, tenor and mode.Field corresponds to the topic and the activities related to the topic. Thus the author analyzes the characteristics of vocabulary which can directly reflect the topic and related activities.Formal forums involve more technical terms, nouns and nominalized words.Tenor shows social relationship between the speaker and the listener. The speaker is teaching as a professor and audiences are listening as students. The speaker with high social status is more likely to show his profound knowledge and leave an impression of professionalism. Therefore, the author will focus on the syntactic level from the perspective of long and complicated sentences.Mode is the form of language.Interpreting mainly belongs to oral language. The author will analyze the speaker's speed of speech andbody language features in formal occasions. This report will be divided into four chapters. The first chapter is a description of the task.It mainly introduces the background, features of the task and the clients' requirements.Chapter two describes the process of interpreting, including pre-task preparation, interpreting process and post-task reflection.Chapter three analyzes the register characteristics of the source language. In order to achieve register equivalence in interpreting practice, corresponding interpreting strategies are provided in Chapter Four. Then,Chapter Five is a conclusion, which summarizes the interpreting experience, limitations and suggestions of this report. It is hoped that this paper can provide some references for the interpreters who are newly involved in formal interpreting forums.
