At present,some problems,such as overemphasizing students' language input but ignoring their output,separating learning from using and so on,exist in spoken English teaching in higher vocational colleges.Besides,students in these colleges are generally low in terms of language proficiency and poor in terms of spoken English competence.The Production-Oriented Approach(POA in short),which optimizes the effect of English classroom teaching and provides a new way for spoken English teaching in higher vocational colleges,advocates that the output task of the students is always taken as the starting point and goal,all classroom activities should center on the learning,and that the teacher should guide students in learning to use and using while learning.Because of this,in recent years,more and more scholars have been attracted to try this method in class,which achieved satisfactory teaching effects.However,so far,few studies have explored the application of this method in English teaching in higher vocational colleges,especially in the field of spoken English teaching.This study,therefore,attempts to apply POA to spoken English teaching in higher vocational colleges,trying to address the following two questions:1)What are the effects of POA on students' interest in spokenEnglish learning?2)What are the effects of POA on students' spoken English competence?Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study,in which 55 students from a higher vocational college were recruited as participants.The data from the questionnaires and the pre-and post-tests of the spoken English have been collected and analyzed by SPSS20.0,and some students were interviewed.The results are as follows:1)POA can improve higher vocational college students' spoken English learning interest,which takes the production of spoken English as the goal and high-quality language knowledge input as the carrier to improve the motivation of spoken English learning of higher vocational college students,and enhances their learning initiative and their enthusiasm.2)POA can improve the competence of students' spoken English.The application of this method in spoken English teaching enables students to get various forms of training and opportunities to practice for many times in class,which improves the effect of spoken English output and improves students' spoken English competence.The results of this study show that POA can promote the learners' interest and spoken English competence in the higher vocational colleges.The results also shed some new light on the reform of spoken Englishteaching in higher vocational colleges.Future studies are recommended to carry out as the present research needs to be improved in terms of the experimental time,the sample size,the selection of input materials and the design of output tasks,to further explore the effectiveness of this method.
