A Comparative Study On The Reproduction Of Fanny Price's Image In The Two Chinese Translations Of Mansfield Park From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Theory

Feminist translation theory is the outcome of the integration of translation studies and feminism.Feminist translators believe that translation is a process of rewriting and feminizing.They aim to make women seen and heard in their translations.An important way to achieve their goals is to faithfully reproduce the image of women presented in the source text.However,few studies have focused on image reproduction from the perspective of feminist translation theory.Mansfield Park shows Jane Austen's understanding of the essence of love and marriage where a series of female figures have been successfully created.The author of this thesis compares the version of Zi Pei,a famous Chinese translator and the professor of Lanzhou University,with the work of a female translator Xi Yuqing on the reproduction of Fanny's image from the perspective of feminist translation theory.The thesis studies two Chinese translations of Mansfield Park based on the model of image reproduction(i.e.direct description: appearance,language,actions,psychology;indirect description: interactions with other characters and description of environment).This thesis tries to answer below questions:(a)How Fanny's image is reproduced in the two Chinese translations;(b)Are there any differences between the two translations in terms of image reproduction;(c)What are the reasons behind the differences;(d)Whether the image of Fanny is faithfully reproduced or distorted in the two translations.Major findings are as follows:(a)The influence of feminist consciousness on the translation of feminist literature can not be ignored.(b)There are differences between two translations in direct and indirect description of Fanny's image.The female version restores and strengthens the image of Fanny presented in the source text while the male version sometimes conveys the patriarchal language in his translation.(c)The differences of two translations are influenced by gender differences and context.
