Water plays an important role in the development of human civilization. The use of water for production has promoted the progress of society. As a carrier and means for people to obtain groundwater resources, wells have an important and far-reaching impact on human civilization.Studying the history and culture of water wells is undoubtedly an important perspective for observing the progress of human civilization.Wells are the product of the combination of productivity and production tools. The function of early wells was to solve people's drinking needs. In order to obtain more healthy and hygienic drinking water resources, the ancestors have developed awareness of drinking water in the long-term practice. The generation of water wells has enabled the ancestors to get rid of the dependence on the natural rivers, lakes and seas, and promote the formation of settlements and the development of the city. The middle reaches of the Yangtze River are rich in groundwater resources and have a lot of rainwater, which is more conducive to the drilling of wells than the Yellow River Basin.During the Warring States period and the Qin and Han Dynasties, the production tools were further developed. The well drilling technology in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River was also more advanced. The shape of the well was mainly circular, and the material of the well circle covered stone, pottery, brick and wood.During the Warring States period and the Qin and Han Dynasties, the water wells in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River gradually became more widely used in agriculture and handicraft industry. The distribution of water wells in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River during the Warring States period and Qin and Han Dynasties is mutually confirmed with the handed down documents, which can better understand the social and economic development of the Warring States Period in the Warring States period and Qin and Han Dynasties.Especially in Jingzhou,Ezhou,Changsha,Yiyang and other places in the Qin and Han Dynasties as the main thoroughfare, the population density and spatial layout within the city can be reflected by the number and distribution of wells. As an indispensable part of people's life and production, water wells gradually penetrate into people's spiritual life, and thus produce a well culture marked by worship and taboos related to water wells.
