Metaphoric comprehension competence is an important ability of learning a foreign language as a purpose to achieve the idiomatic and fluent expression.The cultivation of metaphoric comprehension competence is helpful to promote students'foreign language thinking and to build a thinking mode of mastering the target language,so as to improve their language competence.This study based on language transfer theory,metaphor transfer theory and conceptual metaphor theory,they are the theoretical framework of this study.From the learners'perspective of the thinking process and output this study explored the current situation and influencing factors of metaphorical comprehension competence of native Chinese senior learners speaking English as a foreign language.The research objects are 150 high school students from a local senior high school.The scores of a mid-term examination determined the students'language level,the metaphoric comprehension competence test papers are applied as the research tool?the available test papers are 138?while SPSS statistical application is applied in analyzing the data.The research results showed that first,the metaphoric comprehension competence of senior high school students is rather strong.Second,there is a positive correlation between high school students'metaphoric comprehension competence and their language level(the correlation value r=0.344**and the significant value P=0.00<0.05).In this conclusion,the language level is also positively correlated with the ability of discovering metaphorical meaning and explaining metaphorical fluency,which could be inferred that the learners'language level had effect on their metaphoric comprehension competence.Third,the learners in different language levels had significant differences in their understanding of the four types of metaphors.It proved that with the shift of Chinese and English concepts from the same to different,the difficulty of learners'metaphoric comprehension also moved from easy to difficult,while the concept of mother tongue is also from positive transfer to negative transfer.In addition,six students were interviewed in this study in terms of their metaphoric comprehension competence test,so as to provide a more sufficient source for the study.In the end,in the light of the research conclusion,the paper put forward a number of suggestions from the perspective of English teaching and learning,so as to cultivate students'metaphoric comprehension competence and to improve the efficiency of foreign language teaching and learners'English comprehensive competence.
