In the language acquisition, writing is an indispensable and important component of comprehensive language skills. An effective way to improve writing skill is to get engaged in the continuous and repeated process of writing by receiving feedback and revising based on the feedback. However, the current situation is that teachers undertake enormous workload, resulting in the inability to give timely, specific and individualized feedback to each student. With the development of technology,Automated Evaluation System(AWE)comes into being and has been applied in the language teaching extensively.Incorporated with Natural Language Processing,Computer Statistics,Information Retrieval, and even Artificial Intelligence Technologies, the research on AWE are in dramatic increase in recent years, but few studies have concentrated on the revision process based on AWE feedback when students complete the writing tasks.By means of writing practices and interviews conducted by 56 non-English major freshmen in one university in Shanghai, this paper aims to analyze the revision process across the drafts based on feedback provided by Pigai AWE system and explore the effect of Pigai on students' written works. The current study finds that Pigai AWE prefers to provide surface-level feedback. Moreover,it is more likely to give students reminding feedback, less error feedback, and the least warning feedback. In terms of revision process, the results show that the automated feedback can motivate students to revise and improve their writing.Students tend to revise more at lower level units such as mechanics, morphemes, words, and phrases, and less at higher level units such as clauses, sentences, and paragraphs. With the help of AWE,the writing quality gets improved,as reflected by the scores given by both AWE and human raters. On the whole, online revision can enlarge students' input, enhance language accuracy, and improve writing quality.Meanwhile, interaction with the machine can effectively promote students' learner autonomy.
