A Report On The Translation Of The English Scientific And Technological Literature On Lighting

This report is about the translation progress of two pieces of scientific and technical literature in optics and photonics,provided by an illumination technology company.The task is an attempt under the guidance of A Correlative Approach to Translation created by Peter Newmark in 1991 with the specific materials in the subject to develop translation skills and provide some experiences for other translators.The detailed analysis of main closeness in the theory and the characteristics of the texts has been conducted in this report.During the translation process,encountered with many technical terms,the complexity of sentence structure and multidimensional content of interdiscipline knowledge,the author applies lexical closeness and grammatical closeness in A Correlative Approach to Translation for solving those problems respectively.Naturalization,literal and paraphrase in lexical closeness are used for dealing with three kinds of lexical problems.Reorganization and non-reorganization in grammatical closeness are feasible solutions for complex sentence structure.It is found that some closeness mentioned above in the theory can serve as a preferable guidance for solving the problems about the translation of scientific and technological literature in photoelectric lighting.The report is divided into five chapters.The author discusses about background of the report,developments in optics and photonics,and description about the source text.The second chapter is about the translation procedure,which consists of pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation.The third chapter introduces the academic background of A Correlative to Translation.The case analysis in the forth chapter expresses the concrete usage of naturalization,literal translation,paraphrase,grammatical closeness,as well as inspection and modification analysis.The last chapter goes to the summary and discussion of the whole translation practice.
