On Differences Between Literary And Non-literary Translation From The Perspective Of The Skopostheory

In the 1970 s,functionalist approaches came into being in Germany.Firstly,Reiss successfully brought purposeful approaches to the translation critique for the first time.She connected language's functions,discourse patterns and translation techniques to develop a pattern of translation critique on the basis of original version and its translation.Secondly,Vermeer proposed the purpose theory and freed translation studies from the original version-oriented approach.The theory holds that translation is a purposeful and task-oriented practice based on the original version.It must be accomplished through negotiation and consultation.Thirdly,Justa Holz Manttari drew on communication and behavioral theory to raise the theory on translation practice.He further developed the skopostheory which regarded translation as purpose-oriented interpersonal effect.Fourthly,Nord made a summary of and refined the functional approaches.She elaborated on internal and external factors in transcript analysis in a systematic way in English for the first time and on how translators could develop the purpose-driven translation techniques based on the function of original materials.The thesis intends to use the skopostheory to analyze some examples in order to demonstrate how a translator chooses a proper way to translate the materials based on the expected functions and context.The translation techniques need to depend on its expected purpose or function,namely the principle of purpose.While focusing on the function of translation,the thesis also aims to pay attention to readability in the context of translation and cohesion between translation and original version.Some think that non-literary translation is easier than literary translation,but it is a misunderstanding.Non-literary translation covers a wide array of professions which pose tremendous challenges to translators.With regard to non-literary translation,translators may be puzzled about when they use literal translation or free translation.Therefore,the thesis aims to utilize skopostheory to solve the problem.
