Vocabulary is an indispensable part of language,and vocabulary knowledge acquisition is the key to language acquisition.Therefore,under the framework of vocabulary knowledge theory,this study uses self-made questionnaires to investigate the vocabulary breadth(vocabulary)and vocabulary depth knowledge(including word meaning and collocation)and their relationship with reading comprehension of64 intermediate Chinese learners.The main findings are as follows:(1)The negative vocabulary size of learners at the intermediate stage is 4441,which is lower than the minimum requirement of vocabulary syllabus.And with the increase of vocabulary difficulty,vocabulary accuracy rate is declining.The acquisition of Grade-C vocabulary are poor,especially the verbs.(2)As for the Vocabulary depth knowledge,the acquisition of the extended meanings and collocations of high-frequency words in grade A and B can not meet the requirements.The acquisition bias of commonly used extended meanings is relatively large.The error rate of collocation is high,especially the collocation of special words in Chinese.(3)The development of vocabulary depth knowledge is relatively consistent with the growth of vocabulary breadth knowledge,but for learners with weaker vocabulary level the development of vocabulary depth knowledge is inconsistent with the growth of vocabulary breadth knowledge.(4)Both vocabulary breadth knowledge and depth knowledge are positively correlated with reading comprehension,but vocabulary breadth knowledge has more advantages in influencing and predicting reading comprehension.In conclusion,this study finds that learners' knowledge of vocabulary breadth and vocabulary depth can have a significant impact on whether they can do Chinese comprehension accurately,and the lack of vocabulary breadth knowledge will make Chinese reading more difficult.On this basis,the paper provides some corresponding suggestions focusing on vocabulary acquisition and vocabulary test.
