A Corpus-based Comparative Study On The Translator's Style In The Chinese Translation Of Animal Farm

With the aid of the English-Chinese parallel corpus of George Orwell's novel Animal Farm,the present thesis adopts the corpus-based approach to probe into the translator style of Fu Weici and Sun Zhongxu by a study of the personal pronoun with“we/us”as a case in point.Though a comparative study combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis by seeking the link between the inclusiveness and exclusiveness of“we”or“us”and the translation by the two translators,it can be safely concluded that the translation strategies of dealing with the first person plural pronouns fall into three categories:correspondence,omission and substitution.The translator styles of Fu Weici and Sun Zhongxu are mainly manifested in the following three aspects.First and foremost,Fu Weici has strong preference for using“??”while Sun Zhongxu tends to use“??”solely when it comes to the strategy of correspondence.Second,both translators show good flexibility in the strategy of omission.Third,substitution is seen in Fu's translation but not in Sun's.It is found that both objective factors and subjective factors can lead to the difference in their translator style.Objective factors can be further divided into two linguistic ones and a non-linguistic one.The former stems from the inclusiveness and exclusiveness of first person plural pronoun as well as the ultimate difference between English,a hypotactic language and Chinese,a paratactic language while the latter has its root in the translator's region.In another development,the subjective factors derive from the outward potential readership and the inward character of the translator.
