A Study Of The English Retranslaions Of Lao CAN You Ji From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

In the history of literary translation,the phenomenon of retranslation always exists.In translation studies,retranslation is the process of perfecting the old translations so that the new version can better supplement the information and intention that the old cannot reproduce.This thesis takes the Yangs' version as the previous translation,and Shadick's version and Geng Zhi and Xiao Liming's version as the retranslations,compares the latter two retranslations with the translation of the Yangs,analyzes their retranslating characteristics of particularities and universalities,views particularities and universalities of the latter two retranslations as the object of study,and finally explains them from the perspective of Chesterman's translation ethics.In this study,it mainly adopts exemplification,comparison and analysis.And it will deal with the following three questions: What are the retranslating styles of the two retranslations compared with the Yangs' version? What are the similarities between them? What models of ethics do their retranslating characteristics under the guidance of Chesterman's five models respectively show? This thesis finds that retranslating universalities and particularities in different stages can be well explained by different models of ethics and conversely they show diverse models.Besides,with regard to the universality of translation,Ke Fei wrote that it meant that the translations had some typical,cross-linguistic and common characteristics different from the original text(Zhang Jing,2008).And in relation to the particularities of translation,it refers to the translation style different from the original,known as individualities.Therefore,taking the Yangs' version as the previous translation,Shadick's version and Geng Zhi and Xiao Liming's version as the retranslations,this thesis extracts some typical cases,compares the latter two retranslations with the translation of the Yangs,explains retranslating particularities and universalities of the two retranslations from the perspective of Chesterman's five ethical models,andeventually makes an assessment of them from the rationality,the contributing factors and the instructive significance.Through the analysis and explanation of these retranslating characteristics,the author finds that the two retranslations show different retranslation styles compared to the previous translation of the Yangs and that Chesterman's five ethical models can well explain these characteristics.Conversely,the characteristics of particularities and universalities of the two retranslations also show diverse ethical models of translation.
