Homework design is an important part of English teaching in primary schools.It is of great benefit to improve the quality of English teaching.By means of questionnaire and interview,this study aims to explore the current situation of English homework design in primary schools.The participants in the study covers 200 students and 4 English teachers from the fifth and sixth grades of Xi'an Primary School of Shaanxi Province.The research is based on the questionnaires designed by Sarah North and Hannah Pillay in 2002,and combined with the questionnaires of several graduate students.The data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 to determine the relevant dimensions of homework design such as form,content,quantity,function and level of difficulty.Through quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,this study found the existing problems in these five dimensions,and attempted to put forward some principles and strategies of optimizing homework design.Through relevant investigations of this study,the author found that the main problems in the design of English homework in primary schools are on the type and content,too heavy workload,unclear function and purpose,and unreasonable level of difficulty.Therefore,based on Constructivism Learning Theory,Zone of Proximal Development and Multiple Intelligences Theory,six principles of homework design are put forward,and corresponding improvement measures are proposed to solving the existing problems.
