As an exemplary academic writing activity,Summary Writing integrates the assessment of both reading and writing abilities,which are measured in reading comprehension,generalization/summarizing and written production in an integrated manner.Therefore,summary writing training is of great benefit to improving students' inductive generalization ability,logical analysis ability and language expression ability.The examination form of the writing part of The National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 version)proposes a summary writing type.In the latest reform of National Matriculation English Test(Shanghai/Zhejiang),“Summary Writing” has been newly added to its writing section.Therefore,Summary Writing is important.However,there are many problems in high school students' writing at present,and the writing level of students is far from the requirements of the curriculum standards.Based on the relevant theories of summary writing,this study proposes a teaching model for summary writing: reading the general idea,finding information,reorganizing the points,and refining the summary.The aim is to solve the outstanding problems in current high school writing teaching with the help of summary writing.It also reports an empirical study that tests summary writing strategy's validity.The study tries to answer the following question:Is summary writing teaching model more effective than product approach in writing teaching at senior high school?This question will be discussed from the five aspects: content,vocabulary,syntax,cohesion and organization.The research participants are 87 students of Grade I from Zhangqiu Senior High School.They were divided into two groups,experiment one and controlled one.The summary writing teaching model is applied in the experiment group,while the product approach is used in the controlled group.The experiment lasted for three months.Both groups were required to take a pretest at the beginning of the experiment to decide on their writing proficiency,and one posttest was given at the end of experiment.The study result shows that summary writing teaching model is more effective than product approach in English writing at senior higher school because the score of experimental class is higher than that of the control class.The achievements of the experimental group are better than those of the controlled group in these four aspects: vocabulary,syntax,cohesion and organization.Under guidance of summary writing teaching model,writing language expression forms are more diversified,which improves students' ability to express their opinions.
