In recent years,in foreign language teaching and learning,in addition to language knowledge and skills, the importance of culture has gradually become recognized. For language learners, intercultural communication competence is very important, which is inextricably linked to culture. In the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition),it is also proposed that foreign language teaching needs to cultivate students' cultural awareness. However, although cultural teaching has gradually gained attention, the teaching effect has not been satisfactory. The intercultural communication competence of students has not been effectively improved. Therefore, based on the junior high school English textbooks Go for it,the author combines the current situation of cultural teaching and learning in this thesis, and tries to find some feasible ways to improve students' intercultural communication competence.Based on the cultural schema theory, this paper uses the seven elements of Fu Yonggang and Li Tianxing's cultural teaching and the theory of textbook culture analysis of Professor Niu Xinsheng, and also refers to the requirements of cultural teaching in the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2011 edition),analyzes the current level of students' intercultural competence, researches how teachers and students deal with the cultural content of the textbooks, and then solves the following three research questions:(1)What is the level of students' current intercultural communication competence after learning five textbooks?(2)What difficulties do students have in achieving the desire level of intercultural communication competence? And how does the test result relate to textbooks?(3)How to make better use of teaching materials to improve students' intercultural communication competence? First of all,the author analyzes the cultural content of the five textbooks, and then conducts intercultural communication competence test and questionnaire on 74 ninth grade students in Cangqian Middle School. Finally, the author interviews nine English teachers of the school. After using SPSS16.0 and Excel software to analyze the obtained data, this thesis has the following findings: First, the cultural content of the textbook is very rich, which can meet the cultural input of the students, but the proportion distribution of different types of cultural content is not very uniform.Second, the students have a good grasp of the material culture and behavioral culture in the textbooks, but they often encounter difficulties in the specific application process,so the intercultural communication competence is at a medium level. Moreover, through the questionnaire, students do not show enough interests in the setting of cultural content in the textbooks, and they believe that there is a lack of training atmosphere for cultural content in the classroom.Third, the difficulties encountered in cultural teaching are that teachers lack effective skills to organize culture teaching class and the setting of cultural content in teaching materials is difficult to carry out rich and varied cultural teaching activities.Based on the above findings, the thesis concludes with suggestions on how to better use teaching materials to improve students' intercultural communication competence.
