Ancient Melodies as a novel with the characteristics of the literary creation was born in the process of the author Ling Shuhua making the cultural exchange between China and the West.Ling Shuhua used this English autobiographical novel to tell the Western readers her childhood story. The practice of literary creation shows readers the rich connotation of diaspora literature. In the context of today's globalization, the examination of modern writers' overseas English works should attract people's attention.Based on Ancient Melodies, the thesis mainly uses the cross-cultural,post-colonialism and the theory of diaspora to conduct a fine-grained analysis of the Ancient Melodies.Firstly,Ling Shuhua shows the external text space of Ancient Melodies and its generation process based on the relationship of Ling Shuhua' acquaintance with Julian, the correspondence with Woolf and the communication with the Bloomsbury group.Secondly,in the internal text space of Ancient Melodies,Ling Shuhua uses the writing strategy of "Self-Orientalism" to describe the story with Chinese characteristics, adopting the autobiographical style by the text of English language. In addition,a longing for a beautiful home and a desire to return to his homeland root in Ling Shuhua's inner heart,in which his work's theme of home depicting and identity seeking is fully reflected. After the exploration and research into the external and internal text space of Ancient Melodies,it can be found that Ling Shuhua's diaspora writing is influenced by the dual cultural orientation. On the narrative side of the text, she not only caters to the Western readers' pursuit of exoticism but also infiltrates the values of self-awareness instead of following the West blindly, which shows the dual dimensions of Ancient Melodies as well as the unique charm of diaspora literature.
