Among the four basic skills in higher vocational English,writing is not only the key content of teaching,but also an important skill for higher vocational college students.However,there are many problems in higher vocational college students' English writing,such as inaccurate words,collocation errors,Chinglish and so on.The present situation of English writing for higher vocational college students is not optimistic.Therefore,in view of the present situation of English writing for higher vocational college students,this study applies lexical chunks teaching to English writing teaching in higher vocational colleges in order to explore the effect of lexical chunks teaching on students' writing competence and improve their writing competence.In the experiment,90 students from two natural intact in Shandong Xiandai College were chosen as subjects,and designated randomly as the controlled class and the experimental class.During the 16-week teaching experiment,the conventional writing teaching method was applied to the controlled class,while lexical chunks teaching was applied to the experimental class.This study adopts quantitative and qualitative research methods,which mainly includes the following three research questions:1.Whether lexical chunks teaching can increase the number of lexical chunks in higher vocational college students' English writing or not?2.Is there any correlation between the number of lexical chunks and writing scores in higher vocational college students' English writings?3.Whether lexical chunks teaching can improve higher vocational college students' linguistic accuracy of writing or not?Through the comparison and analysis of the number of lexical chunks used in the pre-test and post-test of students' English writing,this thesis aims to study the changes of the number of lexical chunks before and after the experiment.The correlation analysis between the number of lexical chunks and students' writing scores is carried out to know about the correlation between them.After the experiment,this study analyzes the changes in higher vocational college students' linguistic accuracy of writing by comparing and analyzing students' writing samples taken from the pre-test and post-test of the experimental class.The results of the study indicate that lexical chunks teaching can increase the number of lexical chunks in higher vocational college students' English writing,and there is a positive correlation between the number of lexical chunks and writing scores in higher vocational college students' English writing.At the same time,lexical chunks teaching can also improve higher vocational college students' linguistic accuracy of writing.Therefore,lexical chunks teaching can play a positive role in improving higher vocational college students' writing competence.Though with some limitations,this study is expected to provide some valuable references for English writing teaching in higher vocational colleges,to improve higher vocational college students' English writing competence,and to encourage more English teachers to apply lexical chunks teaching in English writing teaching.
