English curriculum standards states that students in the third and fourth grades are able to recognize, read simple vocabulary. However,in actual English teaching, teachers often devote a lot of time and energy to vocabulary teaching, but the results are always insufficient.Nowadays, more and more English teachers realize that they can promote students' vocabulary acquisition by the singing instruction in formal English class.Students in the lower grades can't concentrate for a long time, and their attention is mostly related to interest and emotion. The storytelling, bright colors, and rich pictures of English picture books can attract the attention of primary school students.Listening to and singing songs can stimulate the brain as well as built high-spirited excitement of the right brain nerve, which can not only inspire thinking and make language resonated but also help enhance memory. This paper studies the effect of singing picture books on the memory of vocabulary among lower grade students.Based on the literature review, this paper puts forward the following hypothesis: Singing picture books can help to enhance the memory of students' vocabulary. In order to verify this hypothesis, this paper conducts a teaching experiment among fourth grade students from one primary school in Hunan Province, trying to find out the answers to the following questions:(1)What is the effect of singing picture books on immediate recall and delayed recall of vocabulary? And is there any difference between the experimental class and the control class?(2)What is the students' perception of singing picture books? And is there any relationship between students' perception and vocabulary recall and retention? The research was operated in two parallel classes: an Experimental Class and a Control Class.Singing picture books was used in the Experimental Class while the Control Class was taught by just reading picture books without singing.Through one term experiment, the result demonstrated that the experimental class gained much higher scores than the control class in vocabulary recall and retention, and there was a significant difference between the two classes. And there was a close correlation between students' perception of singing picture books and their vocabulary performance in the experimental class. Therefore we come to the conclusion that the application of singing picture book instruction enhances vocabulary recall and retention as well as the whole English learning performance, and the relationship between students' positive attitude toward signing picture book instruction and their vocabulary achievement demonstrates singing picture books could help achieve a greater efficacy in picture book reading.
