John Stuart Mill is one of the renowned British ideologists in the 19 th century. The thesis is based on the concept of individuality put forward by Mill.By studying the practical dilemma faced by individuality, and through interpretation of “individuality, one of the elements of well-being”,the paper aims to explore Mill's reservation and inheritance for the complete concept of enlightenment individuality, and the uniqueness of Mill's liberal thought endowed by his individuality concept as well as the modern values of his idea of individuality. As part of his liberal thoughts,Mill's individuality is based on the revision of Bentham's traditional utilitarianism.Individuality is fundamental to Mill's theories. In the revised utilitarianism, its broadest sense refers to the development of human.Human development needs the cultivation of individuality.Liberalism provides conditions for individuality, and therefore reach the organic unity of value categories such as liberalism, utilitarianism and individuality. The linkage between Mill's liberalism and the objective ideal of human individuality development as well as self-realization makes Mill's liberalism significantly different from other ideological trend on liberalism in the 20 th century.Reflecting on Mill's individuality,we may find a good remedy for fake individuality in modern times,as well as the supplement and correction from Mill's classical liberalism to modern liberalism.
