A Study On The English Translation Of Speech And Thought Presentation In Na Han

Not only does Lu Xun be a great thinker and revolutionary,but also he is an epoch-making writer.His literary works are well-known all over the world.Among all Lu Xun's literary works,Na Han is his first story collection,which affects generations of Chinese and has huge influence abroad.While in the process of Na Han “going out”,character talks have attracted great attention from translators at home and abroad because of its high frequency and profound internal significance.Therefore,according to Leech and Shot's classification about speech and thought presentation,this thesis makes an analysis of the speech and thought presentation in the two English translations of Yang Xianyi & Glaydis Yang and Julia Lovell from the perspective of narratology,and then,it makes a comparison between the two English versions.In the research process,this thesis combines corpus and manual marking in statistical data,and it adopts comparative study,case study and qualitative analysis in research methods.This thesis mainly answers the following three questions:(1)How did the translators of the two English versions translate the speech and thought presentation in the original text of Na Han?(2)After the translators change the original speech and thought presentation,what kind of narrative effects and translation effects will be produced in the translated versions?(3)What kind of narrative style of Yang Xianyi &Glaydis Yang and Julia Lovell can be reflected by analyzing their choice of speech and thought presentation?Through this research,the author draws the following findings:Firstly,generally speaking,Yang Xianyi & Glaydis Yang and Julia Lovell are faithful to the original speech presentation in their translations,but they have greatly changed the original thought presentation.In addition,the rewriting degree of Lovell is higher than that of Yang Xianyi & Glaydis Yang.Secondly,the narrative effects of the translated text will be different from that of the original text when the speech and thought presentation in the original text is changed,and these differences are mainly reflected in seven aspects: narrative subjects,narrative distance,narrative rhythm,narrative flow,narrative perspective,narrative communication and narrative person.In addition,because different modes of speech and thought presentation have different functions,the effects of translation in the translated text will be different after changing the modes of speech and thought presentation in the original text.And the different narrative and translation effects in the translated text need to be analyzed concretely with translation examples.Thirdly,in terms of narrative style,as far as the translation of the original speech presentation is concerned,the narrative flow of Yang Xianyi and his wife is more fluent,and their narrative rhythm is quicker than that of Julia Lovell.Nevertheless,for the translation of the original thought presentation,the situation in the two English versions is just the opposite.From the perspective of narratology,this thesis makes a comparative study of the speech and thought presentation in the two English versions,and it analyzes narrative and translation effects in the two English versions with the translator's change of the original speech and thought presentation.In addition,the purpose of the thesis is to give some enlightenment to translation practice and translation evaluation in the future.At the same time,this thesis also makes us have a certain understanding of the narrative style of Yang Xianyi &Glaydis Yang and Julia Lovell,of course,this preliminary conclusion about their narrative style needs more texts to verify.
