A Corpus-based Study Of Explicitation Of Personal Pronouns In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting At Press Conference

With the deepening of academic research on the characteristics of translation language in recent years,the research on the language characteristics of interpreted texts has gradually attracted more and more attention as well.Based on many interpreting phenomena,scholars have tried to reveal the unique but regular language characteristics behind interpreted texts and analyze the essence of interpreting activities theoretically on the basis of empirical research.With the expansion of research field since the 1990s,some research methods of other disciplines have been gradually applied to interpreting studies.Corpus-based interpreting study is one of the main representatives.In the early 1990s,the combination of corpus linguistics and descriptive translation studies led to corpus-based translation studies.However,corpus-based translation studies are confined to the study of written translation texts.Out of theoretical and practical difficulties along with the lack of attention,corpus-based interpreting studies have always been neglected.Since Mona Baker put forward the hypothesis of translation universals,various parallel corpora and comparable corpora have been gradually used to verify the existence of translation universals.So far,some achievements have been made in the study of translation universals.However,these studies only take written translation corpora as objects.There are relatively fewer empirical studies on the validity of translation universals in interpreted texts.Explicitation,as one of the typical characteristics of translation universals,has been considered as one of the breakthrough points to verify the hypothesis of translation universals by the academic circleBased on the self-built Parallel Corpus of Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting at Press Conference as well as Comparable Corpus of Press Conference Interpreted English and Press Conference Original English,this research attempts to explore the characteristics in the use of personal pronouns in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting at press conference from an inter-lingual and intra-lingual perspective respectively.The study shows:1)Compared with the personal pronouns in press conference original Chinese,those in press conference interpreted English show a tendency of explicitation,especially the first and the third personal pronouns;2)Compared with press conference original English,however,there is an overall tendency of implicitation in the personal pronouns in press conference interpreted English.Finally,the paper discusses the above phenomenon on the basis of linguistic difference between English and Chinese,interpersonal and textual functions of personal pronouns,and Source Language Shinning Through.On the one hand,the present study,is an active attempt to study the explication of personal pronouns in Chinese-English interpretation based on corpus.On the other hand,it plays an enlightening role in verifying whether Chinese-English interpreted language also has the characteristics of translation universals.
