Su Tong(??)is one of the most acclaimed novelists in China who wrote a full-length novel entitled "He 'an" from 2007 to 2009.Since its publication in 2009,it has attracted the attention of domestic and foreign scholars.Su Tong won the third Man Asian Literary Prize in 2009 for this novel and became the second Chinese person to be awarded this award since its establishment.Like other literary works, this novel was also translated into English The Boat to Redemption by the famous American translator Howard Goldblatt and published in 2010.Goldblatt is a famous sinologist and translator both at home and abroad and his numerous translated literary works have received extensive attention. The Boat to Redemption has received the attention from many scholars, but there have been very few translation studies on this English text. The search in CNKI reveals that one translation study by Ding(2015)explores it from the perspective of the translation manipulation theory. This thesis aims to investigate the translation style of The Boat to Redemption based on corpora. The corpus data come from a parallel/translation corpus and a comparable corpus.Drawing on the corpus data retrieved from the above mentioned corpora, the study looks at the translation style from the perspective of descriptive translation studies. It makes intralingual comparative analyses of the corpus data at lexical, syntactic and textual levels by the application of WordSmith Tools 4.0 and Antconc etc, which will highlight the translation style of The Boat to Redemption. In addition,it also makes an interlingual comparison between the original Chinese novel and the English translated text to get the pseudo-faithfulness of Goldblatt in the translations of address forms and culture-loaded words. It is found that on the whole,The Boat to Redemption is easy and plain for readers to understand by using simple words, short sentences, and less subordinating ones. What's more, the findings in this research are consistent with those of English translations made by Laviosa,Baker and other scholars. The combination of quantitative analysis based on data and qualitative analysis based on descriptive translation study helps to reveal a clear and objective translation style of The Boat to Redemption. It is hoped that the findings of this thesis will help the scholars to fully understand the translation style of Goldblatt.Besides, this study can also be regarded as an active attempt and exploration of the translation style combining corpora and translation stylistics. It will provide implications for corpus translation studies, descriptive translation studies and translation style research.
