A Report On E-C Translation Of The Man Without A Shadow From The Perspective Of Nord’s Functional Theory

The Man Without a Shadow is written by Joyce Carol Oates,a famous American writer who has been twice nominated for Nobel Prize in literature.The novel narrates the love story between the protagonists Elihu Hoopes and Margot Sharpe.After its publication,it has aroused strong attention in the academic circle and extensive discussion among readers.Its Chinese version,however,cannot be found at present.Therefore,it has important research value.Guided by Nord’s functional theory,this report follows the principle of “function plus loyalty” and explains the methods used for translation of the novel from the lexical,syntactic and rhetorical level.In terms of vocabulary,the translator mainly use free translation and conversion to make the translation smooth and fluent.With respect to sentence,the translator uses reorganization,division and conversion to make the translation conform to the expression of the target language.At the rhetorical level,the translator mainly uses literal and free translation methods to deal with metaphors,repetitions,and parallel sentences in the original text.By using the above translation methods,the translation is easier for readers to accept.Finally,the report gives a comprehensive summary of the translation practice,pointing out that in translation practice,the relationship between the translator and the author,the reader of the original text and the reader of the target text should be strengthened to solve the problem that today’s novel translation weakens the role of the author and thus cuts off the consistency of readers’ reading experience under the background of the two languages.It hopes that this report can provide some references for future translation of Oates’ novels and other translators engaged in novel translation.
