| The cooperation between China and Africa has been long-lasting,and the achievements reached are fruitful.As President Xi says,China and Africa have similar historical experiences and common missions.In the past years,they have made concrete efforts and embarked on a specific road of win-win cooperation.Scholars have done a lot of researches about CAC(China-Africa Cooperation)discourses,most of which are from the perspective of the translation of relative speeches and discourse analysis of news reports.But not much has been found in the study of CAC from the perspective of appraisal.The CAC news reports contain a great number of appraisal resources,with rich interpersonal meanings,which plays a significant role in expressing the social values of CAC.Appraisal,based on systematic functional grammar,is a new development of the interpersonal meaning,which aims to describe the attitudes,stances of appraisers through the evaluative resources.AT consists of three subsystems: Attitude,Engagement and Graduation.This thesis will discuss the CAC news discourse from the perspective of three subsystems.Because of the common grounds between AT and PDA,the present research applies AT in the view of PDA to explore the constructive meanings in the news discourses.This study chooses 30 news reports in the "Opinion" section on the FOCAC 2018 website as the corpus text.From the perspective of PDA,qualitative and quantitative methods are adopted to explore the positive discourse meanings in the selected news discourse within the framework of AT.Firstly,the study uses UAM corpus tool to annotate the corpus text several times to get the general distribution of various appraisal resources in the discourse and the results are displayed in tables.Secondly,specific examples are analyzed to explore how the positive interpersonal meanings are realized and what's the positive social meanings interpreted in the selected texts.All these studies indicate how the appraisers express evaluations and deliver positive energy.Through the analysis,it is found that at first the text contains a large number of appraisal resources,but the distributive features of these resources are uneven.The attitudinal resources occupy the largest percentage of 44.85%(see Table4.1),followed by engagement resources of 28.02%(see Table4.1)--mostly entertain,acknowledge and deny resources.Graduation resources take the last proportion of 26.73%(see Table4.1),which are mostly force resources.Secondly,from the perspective of PDA,it can be inferred that the massive use of positive attitudinal resources has increased people's confidence in CAC,and at the same time strengthened the cooperation and CACSF.Engagement resources provide extensive negotiation space through discourse expansion and contraction,increasing the objectivity and credibility of news discourse.The graduation resources increase the emotional resonance with readers,and emphasize the extraordinary achievements attained through CAC.Through PDA analysis,the social values of CAC expressed in the news discourse are found to help promote mutual development,the construction of CACSF and contribute to the improvement of China's national image.This study analyzes the significance of CAC under the framework of AT,which helps to promote the spread of the values of CAC and it has certain enlightening significance in the construction of China-Africa discourse model.In terms of theory,this research would serve as a complement to the current research on AT and PDA. |
