Representation Of Y?u+NP In CEDs Based On Construction Grammar

In Chinese,y?u is a word with high frequency and many usages,such as y?u+NP,y?u+NP+VP,degree nouns+y?u+NP,y?u X wú X,which has already attracted much attention on educational circles.Among them,the y?u+NP construction is not only studied by many Chinese scholars,but also a great challenge to Chinese as a foreign language(CFL)learners for its complicated structure and meaning.However,it seems that the current Chinese-English dictionaries(CEDs)can't satisfy learners' needs on y?u+NP.As important reference books,CEDs should present it to satisfy foreign CFL learners' needs fully.Therefore,from the perspective of construction grammar theory,the thesis aims to analyze the deficiencies of present CEDs on the representation of y?u+NP and optimize it in order to help foreign CFL learners acquire the constructions better.Firstly,the thesis demonstrates the existence of y?u+NP based on construction grammar,analyzes its interpretations and their connections,properties of NP and semantic constraints.And then,in order to make sure CFL learners' comprehension and production,a semantic multiple-choice test and a translation test are done and three types of errors are concluded: omission,addition and false information.Four causes for these errors are also described: insufficient second language input,overgeneralization,negative transfer and influence of dictionaries or other authoritative books.Next,three major domestic CEDs are analyzed so as to investigate whether the existing dictionaries can effectively help learners.The study shows that there are still some deficiencies in the present CEDs: lack of complete construction meaning,inaccurate label of part ofspeech and lack of adequate examples.Finally,under the guidance of construction grammar,a tentative model on the representation of y?u+NP construction as well as specific samples in current CEDs are proposed.The thesis is the first to analyze the representation of y?u+NP in CEDs according to construction grammar.Theoretically,it expands the scope of theoretical application of construction grammar;practically,the tentative model could be helpful for compilation of CEDs.However,there are still some shortcomings:(1)the samples of empirical analysis are limited,which may be different from the actual situation;(2)the optimized representation model proposed finally hasn't been tested so far.
