Classical Chinese poetry is an important part of the traditional culture. Its uniqueness lies in exquisitely formed images. As one of the most outstanding poets of the Tang Dynasty in China,Li Bai is regarded as the "Immortal Poet" and is highly admired by scholars at home and abroad. His poems contain rich cultural connotations,a wide range of topics and rich images. In the field of the English translation of classical Chinese poetry, his poems are also favored by scholars.Through the analysis of the existing researches,it is found that the researches on the images in Li Bai's poetry are currently focused on a single image, and few people study all images in one poem in a certain type of poetry. With the development of cognitive science, one of the most rapidly developing field is cognitive poetics.Using the tools provided by cognitive science, cognitive poetics is to explore how human beings process information and to offer cognitive hypotheses that link the specific effects of poetry to the particular regularities that occur in literary texts in a systematic way.The figure-ground theory in cognitive poetics bases on the principle of prominence. The figure refers to the part that could attract people's attention, and the ground refers to the part that people ignore.Images in poetry mean both objective images that can be perceived by people and artistic images created by people incorporating emotion into objective images. To a certain extent, the figure-ground theory in language manifests as a spatial positional relationship, which could be used to analyze images in poetry. An image schema is a kind of cognitive structure formed by people's further abstraction of the objective images and their relations based on their own experience or interaction with the world. Therefore,it can be used to interpret the cultural connotation and emotion contained in images. This thesis chooses Li Bai's poems as the study object and divides them into landscape poems, homesickness poems, farewell poems, love poems, and poems of great ambition.By means of the figure-ground theory and image schemas of cognitive poetics, this thesis attempts to analyze poetic images and interpret the profound cultural connotation of images.Through analysis, this thesis finds out that the figure-ground theory is suitable for the description of sceneries and the rendering of scenes,so it is good for analyzing images in landscape poems, homesickness poems, farewell poems, love poems, and poems of great ambition. It may not be an option for narrative love poems.Without the corresponding knowledge and cognitive structures,it is difficult for people to understand emotions and cultural connotations behind images. This thesis explores the interpretation of classical Chinese poetry and how to better express the poet's emotions through the translation of images,so as to provide a certain theoretical reference to the English translation of Chinese poetry. The analysis of poetic images from the perspective of cognitive poetics allows readers to better understand and appreciate poetry and provides a new perspective on the appreciation of classical Chinese poetry. At the same time, the study of classical Chinese poetry and its English translation has important enlightenment significance and a realistic driving effect on the overseas promotion of Chinese literature.
